CJI Surya Kant assures doorstep justice as new court complex opens in Leh

Leh, Mar 28:  The Chief Justice of India (CJI), Justice Surya Kant on Saturday termed his visit to Ladakh as a “proud moment” for the Indian judiciary after inaugurating a modern judicial court complex in Leh.

Addressing a press conference, the Chief Justice of India said it was a matter of great honour for him to represent the country’s judicial system in Ladakh, adding that it marked the first-ever visit of a sitting Chief Justice of India to the Union Territory.

He expressed gratitude to the administrations of Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir, as well as the joint High Court, for their coordinated efforts in developing robust judicial infrastructure for the region.

“The newly inaugurated district court complex is equipped with all modern facilities and is designed to serve the people of Ladakh efficiently for the next 50 years,” he said, adding that the infrastructure would ensure ease of access to justice without inconvenience.

The CJI further informed that a similar state-of-the-art judicial complex in Kargil will also be inaugurated shortly, which he said would cater to the needs of the people of the district for decades to come.

Highlighting advancements in legal services, he noted that the Ladakh State Legal Services Authority has established a modern facility aimed at providing mediation, legal aid and guidance to citizens. The centre, he said, will be staffed with member secretaries and trained paralegal volunteers to assist people effectively.

Calling the new infrastructure among the finest in the country, Justice Kant said such initiatives would ensure that people in remote areas do not have to travel long distances for justice.

He lauded the people of Ladakh for their unwavering faith in the Constitution and the rule of law, stating that their trust in the judiciary is a responsibility that must be upheld.

“The judiciary is emotionally connected with Ladakh. We are committed to bringing justice closer to the people so that they do not face hardships in accessing legal remedies,” he said.

The Chief Justice also acknowledged the contributions and sacrifices of the people of Ladakh, particularly in safeguarding the nation since Sino-Indian War.

He added that efforts are being made to ensure justice and legal support for soldiers, paramilitary personnel, and residents of the region.

Congratulating the people of Ladakh, he said the growing culture of mediation in the region reflects a progressive approach to dispute resolution and is a matter of pride for the judiciary.
